   Possessing intellects at least as complex as our own, whales and dolphins are some of the earth's most fascinating and intelligent creatures.

       For thousands of years, these mammals have been hunted by man using various methods of killing styles for various reasons and products. The past 400 years nearly drove many of them to extinction (some species did go extinct) and the most recent 30 years has many more on the brink...

       Unfortunately, just when most of the world thinks these creatures are protected by international conservation laws, the killing has once again been elevated to the highest levels in over 10 years.

      In this section, Ecodefense.com highlights groups and individuals active in the protection and conservation of these magnificent mammals.

SAVE DOLPHINS, EXPERIENCE JAPAN!

We have found a way to save dolphins in Japan. We just need to be there...

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society is seeking volunteers to spend time in Taiji, Japan this October through November, (and next year) as dolphin defenders. If we are there, they won't kill the dolphins... Activists are urged to join in this group effort to save hundreds of dolphins each year. We can't pay airfare but we can pay for accomodation and food in Taiji. Get the details of what's going on and see how to get involved now!

SEA SHEPHERD CONSERVATION SOCIETY-
     Founded by Paul Watson, one of the original founding members of Greenpeace, this organization is the worlds only enforcer of the lame IWC laws on the high seas...this organization kicks ass for whales, seals, dolphins, sharks, turtles, fish, and all other species of marine life and sets a new standard for the words "DIRECT ACTION"!
EARTH ISLAND INSTITUTE- (In their own words...)
      Earth Island's Project Network consists of more than 30 projects worldwide. Through innovative education and activist campaigns, they are addressing many of the most pressing social and environmental issues: Protecting rainforests, marine mammals, sea turtles, and indigenous lands, promoting organic and sustainable agriculture, ecological paper alternatives, and the emerging Russian environmental movement, pursuing community-based habitat restoration, reduction of marine pollution, and development of urban multicultural environmental leadership.
